Tamiya Type-16 Fighting Vehicle, 1/35th scale

This is the Tamiya 1/35th scale Type-16 fighting vehicle, the latest piece of equipment to join the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force

The model has been built straight from the box for the Hobby Company, who are the importers for Tamiya into the UK

The main camouflage colours are Tamiya, and detail work is using a mixture of acrylics, enamels and oils.

Weathering is very light, as these vehicles are pretty much spotless in everyday use – the JGSDF looks after their toys! An oil wash made with Windsor&Newton raw umber and payne’s grey, with some light drybrushing¬† along edges and details to make it pop just slightly.

Final finish is Vallejo flat varnish thinned 50/50 with Vallejo airbrush thinner and sprayed in light coats, and then some light airbrush weathering with heavily thinned Tamiya acrylic rubber black (xf-85)

The mud and dust on the tyres is just some pigments mixed to a sludge with white spirit, and then liberally brushed all over, once dry excess was removed with a finger and some fine wet&dry paper.

The model was a very quick build indeed – taking around five days from opening the box to taking these pictures. Typically Tamiya, there’s simply nothing much to say about it in terms of buildability – it’s about as perfect as a model gets, and is to be recommended for fans of modern armour, and those who simply want a bit of a change. The model will be on the Hobby Company stand at Scale Model World in Telford in 2018, so pop along and see this and other new releases from the Hobby Co!
